E-weekly Issue 241 - 22 September 2023

Our U14A team, who won at Kent College on Tuesday in the first round of the cup.

Welcome

Today we held our first Open Morning of the term, welcoming almost 50 families to Mayfield. Thank you to all the pupils, staff and Friends of Mayfield who helped provide such a warm welcome to our guests.

On Monday, our Year 7 information evening took place and it was great to see so many of our new parents and guardians and welcome them into the Mayfield community. Next week, on Thursday, we are holding our Sixth Form Information Evening. This will be an opportunity to hear all about Mayfield's Sixth Form experience and how we help the girls prepare for life after Mayfield, with career guidance and support with their university applications. Please RSVP if you have yet to do so. Thank you.

By now you will all have received an invitation to a mass to honour Antonia Beary's time at Mayfield. Please register if you would like to attend so we can accommodate everyone. See details below.

With very best wishes,

Jonathan Forster, Headmaster

Honouring Miss Beary

You are cordially invited to join us for Mass in Mayfield Chapel to honour our former Headmistress, Miss Antonia Beary. Mass will be celebrated by The Most Reverend Richard Moth, Bishop of Arundel and Brighton.

For so many parents, staff, former staff and Old Cornelians, Antonia was the face of Mayfield School and her vision, dedication and exceptional commitment to the Mayfield community was valued by all. Please can we therefore ask that you register to attend the Celebration Mass and provide details of any guests or dietary requirements before Friday 29th September 2023 using either the link below or email oldcornelians@mayfieldgirls.org

Antonia Beary Lourdes Bursary Fund
Throughout Antonia’s career she has been involved in many school and Diocesan trips to Lourdes. To mark her retirement, Antonia would like to ensure that as many girls as possible are given the opportunity to experience the wonder of Lourdes for themselves. We are therefore inviting donations to establish a Lourdes Bursary Fund. This will provide financial support for any girl studying at Mayfield School to undertake a Pilgrimage to Lourdes which would otherwise have been unaffordable.

Potters' Day

On Saturday 16th September, our very own Miss Taylor was our latest lecturer for Potters' Day 2023.  She gave an excellent talk to all of our GCSE and A level students and Art Scholars about her work and her journey from A level and through university. She created some excellent displays for the girls to look at and ask questions of which there were many! She also provided some highly skilled demonstrations on the pottery wheel and showed the girls how to create and apply transfer decoration. All of the information she provided will no doubt help shape a number of projects over the coming months.

Sports News

Hockey
It has been a week packed with fixtures. Last Saturday saw a block fixture against Kent College involving the seniors and U15As. Mayfield came away with one win, one draw and one loss. The U14s then drew against Bede's on Tuesday, with the U13s coming away with a draw and a loss against Bromley High. Finally, the U14s suffered a defeat against Bede's. All coaches have mentioned the progress their teams are making in this opening two weeks. Onwards and upwards, Mayfield!

Netball Success

A big well done to the U14A team who travelled to Kent College on Tuesday to play in the first round of the Sisters in Sport cup. Despite most of the girls having to dust off their Netball cobwebs, Miss Auer and Miss Starr were very complimentary of the team’s win and performance. Bring on the next round, well done ladies!

Success for Mayfield Skiers

Last Sunday, Darcy in Year 12 and Emilia in Year 8 travelled to Chatham for the Annual English Schools Ski Association (ESSKIA) Ski racing regional qualifiers. Both girls performed strongly, finishing in the top ten overall after completing two runs on the slalom course. Darcy came 6th overall and was 3rd across both runs in her age group category. Emilia was 9th overall, which is particularly impressive for a year 8 girl. She was the fastest over both runs for her age-group. We can't wait to see how they perform in January when we head out to Flaine for the British Schoolgirls' races!

Mayfield Carnival

Last weekend saw the annual Mayfield Carnival take place in the village, featuring a torchlight procession as well as a fireworks display. Here are the best photos (with thanks to a friend of a Year 7 parent for the fireworks photos).

Trip to Shakespeare's Globe

The "fog and filthy air" of 'Macbeth' were not difficult to imagine on a wet Bankside, London, on Wednesday, as Year 10 travelled to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. Despite the late night, girls in lessons the next day showed a deep engagement with the drama. They were inspired to think critically about the modern interpretation, and some could even recite memorable lines verbatim, such is the value of seeing a live performance in full. Thank you to all girls and accompanying staff for making this a very positive introduction to our study of the Scottish play.

Miss Joanna Staunton, Head of English

Culinary Flair

As "Bake Off" season approaches, some of the Food and Nut classes at Mayfield have been demonstrating their own baking flair! In Year 12 Culinary Skills, we kicked off with impressive focaccia art this week.

Year 9 will be studying and exploring raising agents this half term. This week included the use of yeast (biological raising agent) to create some very tasty fruit plaits in just one 55 minute lesson!

Coming soon.....Mayfield's Recipe Book, containing 18 of Mayfield girls' favourite recipes. Further details to follow shortly.

Book Reviews

Great reads from the library, as recommended by the girls;

In lower school, Pupil Librarian Nicole has been reading Kat Wolfe Investigates.

"I would recommend the Kat Wolfe series written by Lauren St John. It is about Kat and her friend going on an adventure with a mystery to solve. Breathtaking and fast-paced. Watch this space, more titles in this series will be available in this library shortly."

Pupil Librarian, Nataliia has made this book, Dogs of the Deadlands, her choice for Book of the Week. The author, Anthony McGowan, visited Mayfield last March, on World Book Day. This story follows the lives of Zoya and her pups as they struggle to survive in the wild woods after the Chernobyl disaster.

In main school, Pupil Librarian Freya has chosen this title for the Book of the Week.

"This murder book set in London was so enticing, and the tense moments had me on the edge of my seat. You really gain a connection with the characters. The plot twist at the end was marvellous, unexpected and thrilling!"

Ronan’s Reflection

REMEMBER THAT THE OPPOSITE OF “I,” IS “WE,” NOT “YOU”
In November 2022, Pope Francis published a book titled “I want you to be happy”. The book gathers together his thoughts and ideas on how we can lead happier lives, by embracing our faith. One chapter of the book offers us a radically different way to think and relate to those around us — by seeing them as potential partners with whom to build a peaceful community, rather than individual enemies.

The Bible tells us that great dreams are those capable of being fruitful, capable of sowing peace, of sowing fraternity, of sowing joy, like today: here, these are great dreams because they consider everyone as ‘we.’ Once, a priest asked me: ‘Tell me, what is the opposite of “I.” And I naively fell into the trap and said ‘the opposite of “I” is “you”‘ — ‘No, Father: This is the seed of war. The opposite of “I” is “we.”‘ If I say: The opposite is “you,” I create war; if I say that the opposite of selfishness is “we,” I make peace; I create community, I bring forth the dreams of friendship, of peace,” the Pope explains in the book.

Perhaps this week, we could all try to reframe how we think. When we catch ourselves saying ‘you’, how can we turn that into a ‘we’? In this way, perhaps we can foster and encourage that sense of community that makes Mayfield such a special place to live, study, work and worship.

This Sunday at 11:30 we will celebrate a Service of Word and Communion in the school chapel. Mass with the parish returns on Tuesday evening at 6pm. All are welcome.

Mr Ronan Lavery, Chaplain

Sam Haywood Piano Recital – 26th September

Next Tuesday we are delighted to welcome Sam Haywood back to Mayfield to give a piano recital and masterclass. The recital will be at 1.45pm in the Concert Hall, and is open to members of the public as well as our staff and students.

Equally at home as soloist and chamber musician, Sam Haywood embraces a wide spectrum of the piano repertoire. The New York Times hailed his 'passionate flair and sparkling clarity' and the Washington Post his 'dazzling, evocative playing'.

Tickets for this exciting recital can be purchased here
