International Women and Girls in Science Day

Tuesday marked International Women and Girls in Science Day, and our Science department organised a series of brilliant activities to celebrate and inspire our students. Throughout the week, students of all ages took part in engaging sessions designed to highlight the importance of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and encourage the next generation of female scientists.
The celebrations kicked off on Tuesday morning with our Year 12 MedSoc students leading fun and educational activities for Year 7 and 8. These included myth-busting challenges and a game of Zones of Regulation Bingo, designed to teach younger students about emotional awareness and critical thinking in science. The interactive sessions sparked curiosity and enthusiasm, helping to foster an early interest in medical and scientific fields.
Later in the week, Head of Biology, Mrs Lewis, delivered an inspiring talk on Women in Science throughout history. She highlighted influential female scientists, both past and present, and shared important statistics about women in STEM careers. The talk also explored the various pathways available for students interested in pursuing science-related degrees and careers, encouraging them to consider the many opportunities open to them.
Meanwhile, the science labs were buzzing with hands-on experiments, as students put their learning into practice. A standout moment was Year 11 students constructing DNA models out of sweets! This creative and fun activity helped bring complex biological concepts to life in an engaging and memorable way.
The week was a fantastic celebration of women in science, filled with learning, inspiration, and excitement. A huge thank you to our Science department and all the students who participated in making this event a success. We hope this week has inspired many of our girls to explore the world of science and consider a future in STEM!
