Mayfield MUNers hit Haileybury

Last week, a group of our students had the privilege of attending Haileybury School's 30th Model United Nations (MUN), where they represented Barbados and Lebanon in a series of thought-provoking debates. With an impressive 920 students participating, the conference saw discussions on a wide range of global issues, including cyberterrorism, geoengineering, job security in an increasingly automated world, organ trafficking, forced marriage, freedom of speech, water security, and the ethics of AI in healthcare, to name just a few.

The conference provided an invaluable opportunity for our delegates to engage with the pressing concerns facing the international community today, with around 600 resolutions submitted over the weekend, reflecting the depth of student engagement. Each committee worked tirelessly to address these complex issues, considering solutions that could shape the future of global politics.

The conference concluded with the General Assembly discussing the reform of the United Nations, where students reflected on how the UN could evolve to better manage the challenges of a rapidly changing world.

Our delegates represented their countries and Mayfield with tremendous skill and enthusiasm. A special mention goes to Annette in Year 10, who was Highly Commended for her exceptional work as the delegate for Lebanon on the Middle East and North Africa Committee. Her dedication and insight made her a standout participant in what was an outstanding event for all involved.

This experience provided our students with a unique opportunity to develop their diplomatic and public speaking skills, while also deepening their understanding of international relations and global issues. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the way they contributed to such an enriching experience.

"The debates I had in the newly established Middle East and North Africa committee (MENA) were intriguing and allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone as I broadened my understanding of the issues facing the MENA region including water security, refugees, and state proxies while also writing and submitting a resolution on the topic of the refugee crisis, making multiple speeches for and against other delegates’ resolutions and amendments. This conference has successfully allowed me to feel more confident debating and making speeches in front of some very experienced delegates. Thank you so much to Mrs Kilvington and Mrs Motoc for taking us on this fascinating trip." -

"I thoroughly enjoyed Haileybury MUN, particularly the engaging debates about a range of topics in my committee of over 100 people. We passed resolutions on equal economic opportunities for women, over reliance on fossil fuels and other extremely relevant topics. Overall, it was a great opportunity to learn lots and make lots of new friends!" -

"I had an amazing time in Haileybury this weekend. Although this was my first conference, I really enjoyed it. From the controversial perspectives to the heated debates, this is an experience I will never forget." -
