Year 8 Moon Camp Project

On Tuesday 25th February, our Year 8 students embarked on an exciting journey into the world of STEM at this year’s Moon Camp. Designed to inspire innovation and teamwork, the event challenged students to tackle the complexities of establishing a sustainable base on the Moon.
Throughout the morning, students participated in a range of hands-on activities, each aligned with a specific engineering and scientific discipline. Propulsion Engineers focused on rocket design and testing, exploring the mechanics behind achieving maximum distance. Design Engineers used CAD technology to conceptualise and model habitats for lunar living, while Software Engineers programmed mini moon buggies, enhancing their coding skills to navigate simulated lunar conditions. Meanwhile, Bio Engineers investigated innovative methods for producing essential resources like water, food, and fuel from simple lunar simulants.
The day concluded with students applying their newfound knowledge to create video presentations, showcasing their collaborative efforts and the real-world applications of their theoretical work. These presentations reflected a comprehensive understanding of the challenges involved in lunar habitation and demonstrated impressive creativity and problem-solving skills.
We are immensely proud of the enthusiasm and dedication displayed by all participants. A special thank you goes to our dedicated staff—Mr Warren, Mr Smith, Miss Woodfield, Dr Kasina, Mr Marshall, Mr Ferguson, and Mrs Lewis—who played a pivotal role in facilitating this fantastic event. Their commitment ensured a successful and inspiring experience, encouraging our students to continue exploring the exciting possibilities within STEM fields.
Congratulations to the winners from each pathway, who received freeze-dried astronaut food as their prize:
