2. Uniform requirements

Years 7-11

 At Mayfield we encourage all pupils to take pride in their appearance and to value the sense of ethos and identity that their school uniform provides. School uniform is compulsory for all girls in Years 7 to 11.

Uniform expectations Years 7—11:

  • School provided kilts, (or trouser option) regulation white blouses and School navy-blue jumpers should be worn. If the weather is cold, the School coat may be worn as well.
  • Black polishable shoes of a formal style, with heels less than 1.5 inches.  Note, black trainers, boots, ballet pumps, or platform style shoes are not acceptable. Please see examples of acceptable shoes below.
  • Navy-blue ankle or knee high socks, or navy-blue or black tights.

 The majority of items are bespoke to Mayfield School and as such can only be purchased from the School Shop. 
Note: compulsory items of school uniform which can also be purchased from an alternative high street supplier are marked with an *.

Compulsory items:

  • 1 School coat (choice of two styles)
  • 2 School kilts (on the knee or up to 5/6cm above)
  • 3 white long-sleeved blouses (winter)
  • 5 white short-sleeved blouses (summer)
  • 2 School navy blue v neck pullovers
  • 1 School navy blue fleece (compulsory for Years 7 and 8 only)
  • 5 pairs navy blue or black tights *
  • 5 pairs navy blue ankle or knee high socks *
  • 1 book bag / rucksac * (Year 7 and 8 must have a backpack style bag)
  • 1 Apron for Art and Ceramics*

Optional items:

  • Plain navy blue scarf, gloves and hat *

Compulsory items not purchased via the School Shop:

  • 1 black polishable shoes of a formal style, with heels less than 1.5 inches.
Examples of acceptable school shoes

Jewellery and Hair style:
Girls are permitted to wear a cross and chain or one other discreet necklace and up to two pairs of stud/huggie earrings in each ear. Bracelets and other jewellery may not be worn.

Hair should be of a single natural hair colour. Long hair (Years 7—9) should be neatly tied back with plain, discreet accessories in blue, black or neutral colours.  Year 10 and 11 girls may wear their hair down but may be required to tie it back for some lessons (,e.g. science, PE etc). 

Clear nail polish only is permitted.

Any make up worn should be discreet (no excessive eye liner or false eye lashes). 

Sixth Form Dress Code

Sixth Form dress should be equivalent to smart work attire: classic, rather than fashionable.  Whilst it is important that each individual Sixth Former is able, in part, to reflect her individuality in her dress, she is still expected to reflect her membership of the school community with an appropriate level of formality. Outfits should not distract the students, or anyone else, from work. 

  • Girls must wear a smart skirt, dress or trousers. These should be classic in fit and not made of stretch fabric that rides up and needs to be pulled down. 
  • Skirts/ dresses should be no shorter than 10cm above the knee.
  • Trousers should be tailored. No tight fitting trousers, jeans, cargo pants or leather trousers.
  • Each girl must have a smart, tailored jacket which can be of any colour which they are expected to wear to Assembly, Liturgy and when walking around corridors. No denim or leather jackets, gilets or puffer jackets.
  • Girls must wear smart tops that are not low cut or with thin straps. No sweatshirts or hoodies.
  • Dark coloured shoes, boots and sandals which must be formal in style and of a sensible and safe height. Note: Sliders, Crocs, Uggs or slipper style shoes, platform shoes and boots are not appropriate formal footware. Trainers should only be worn for PE unless agreed by 6th Form Team on medical grounds.
